Arthroscopy at Torrington Orthopaedics
Home

Arthroscopy is being used increasingly at Torrington Orthopaedics as both a diagnostic tool and a treatment option. This minimally invasive technique can permit ultra high detail inspection of the joint surface and the structures within the joint with minimal post operative morbidity (negative consequences perceived by the patient). Osteochondral fragments may be excised using the scope and biopsy specimins harvested for histopathology and bacteriology.

As you may know radiography (x-rays) is excellent at detailing changes in bone and effusion (increased joint fluid production) associated with joint disease, but gives little or no information regarding the articular cartilage and soft tissue articular structures. It is generally these structures that will hold the important information regarding the cause of the patient's lameness.

More and more clients have had arthroscopic procedures performed on their own joints and appreciate the benefits of minimally invasive surgery and diagnostics based on their own experience. They are pleased that their pet can have the same option for the investigation and management of their joint disease.

The system here is one of the most advanced on the market and comprises in addition to the scope and monitor, a mechanical pressure sensitive pump for improved visualisation, a shaver system for debridement of soft and hard tissues and an image recorder that records directly onto hard drive, flash drive and CD.
