Our Fracture Philosophy

Fracture management is arguably the main stay of small animal orthopaedics and the surgeons here have a combined 32 years experience in the management of complex fractures and the revision of fractures that have a complicated recovery.
Good fracture management depends upon surgical experience, sterile theatres, strict adherence to aseptic technique and the availability of a wide range of implants used in fracture repair. We adhere to the biological principles of fracture management and observe the OBDT (Open But Don’t Touch) philosophy whenever this is feasible. We are increasingly using Kyon’s Advanced Locking Plate System (ALPS) which is a Locking Plate System with low contact to the underlying bone. ALPS plates and their locking screws are Titanium. This combination of Low Contact (reducing subperiosteal bone death under the implant) and Titanium reduces infection risk dramatically compared to standard Surgical Stainless Steel Dynamic Compression Plates.
These factors permit the best possible outcome for trauma patients and reduce the echo of the event throughout the life of the patient.
The owners of pets with fractures are often emotionally traumatised by the event that led to injury and being assured of intervention by experienced surgeons helps put their minds at rest. A patient recovering full function leads to greater client satisfaction and this improves your relationship with your clients.
